For years, Bay Area Housing Corp (BAHC) has acquired and adapted homes to serve as full-time residences to people in the Bay Area with I/DD. It made perfect sense to leverage this hard-earned expertise and expand our services to help individual families make adaptations so their family members with a disability can be more comfortable in their family home.
We also wanted to connect with the greater community and inspire support for the projects and mission of BAHC. We landed on the idea of a bocce ball tournament to make this goal come to life. Why bocce? Bocce is a fun, relaxed, playful game that most ambulatory people can play. Our BAHC residents play from time to time but had never played with others in a tournament. In September this year, we worked with Campo di Bocce in Los Gatos to produce our first bocce ball tournament.
The proceeds launched our Home Modification Fund: a fund to help local families modify their homes to fit the needs of their loved ones with I/DD*.
We found ourselves working around pandemic constraints to pull off a safe, fun event. We’re so grateful for the local businesses that stepped up and to fill a 12-team tournament. The tournament raised over $70k and got great reviews from all who participated. We can’t wait to do it again!
